Bridging the Gaps:
Reducing Cardiovascular Risk
in Low Resource Settings
|
We invite you to attend
The International Society of Hypertension (ISH) is playing an increasing role in
terms of education of both patients and physicians around the world. The Society
is attempting to not only introduce best practice, but also ensure that screening
for cardiovascular disease is carried out and that the epidemics of heart disease
and stroke are avoided. These will inevitably occur if cardiovascular disease is
not detected early.
With this in mind, at the forthcoming ISH Scientific Meeting in Vancouver (26th – 30th September 2010), a special event entitled
Bridging the Gaps: Reducing Cardiovascular
Risk in Low Resource Settings
is being organised by the ISH, in collaboration with the World Health Organization
(WHO) and the Lancet. This joint Symposium will take
place on Sunday 26th September and Monday 27th September 2010.
On 26th September, there will be a series of meetings to bring parties together
to:
• present and discuss day-to-day challenges faced by doctors and patients
• review how effectively the blood pressure and cardiovascular risk guidelines are
being implemented
• highlight case studies of barriers to the implementation of best practice for
blood pressure and cardiovascular risk (i.e. geographical, financial cultural or regulatory)
• identify on-going solutions to be implemented by governments in low cost settings
Attendees will include a small delegation of Society representatives, healthcare workers in the field, WHO, industry and ISH International Forum representatives.
This will be followed by a Plenary Session
on 27th September to which we invite you to attend.
Date: Monday 27th September 2010
Venue: Vancouver Convention Centre
High level representation
from government and WHO will be in attendance to hear a summary of the pre-conference meetings and to discuss ways in which they can help implement the programmes more
extensively in their own areas.
It is hoped that the findings of the Symposium, an Accord, will be signed by the
Ministers of Health and published. It is the ultimate aim of the organizers to secure
the commitment of Ministers to implement these programmes more extensively at the
national level.

Future Aims
The event in Vancouver is intended as part of a series of meetings over the next
two years, designed to do more than produce a lone communiqué and will culminate
in a further meeting at the Sydney ISH meeting in 2012. The long term aim is to dismantle
barriers and establish practicable and effective methods that can be used throughout
the developing world to prevent the growing threat of cardiovascular disease.
Delegates wishing to attend the Bridging the Gaps Symposium must be registered for
the ISH 2010 Scientific Meeting.
